Colorado House Rep. Jeni Arndt has been chosen as Fort Collins’ next mayor, meaning there’ll be an open legislative seat later this month.
Arndt, a Democrat, won Tuesday’s election with 63% of the vote, according to an unofficial tally.
She’s currently in her third term in the Colorado House, with her first coming in 2015. She’ll leave the statehouse sometime this month, as the Fort Collins city charter does not allow an elected city official to serve in multiple elected officers.
A vacancy committee will be set up to select a Democrat to fill her role for the rest of her term. One person has already filed to run for her seat in 2022, according to Secretary of State office records: Andrew Boesenecker.
Also on Tuesday, about 59% of Fort Collins voters decided to ban single-use plastic bags at large grocery stores by May 2022 and charge for paper bags. This comes amid discussions for statewide single-use plastics ban.
Arndt is the first registered Democrat to become mayor in Fort Collins since the 1990s, according to the Fort Collins Coloradoan. Two of the city council races triggered recounts and the city wants to swear in new members all at the same time, so Arndt said she plans to resign her House seat about a week before the swearing in.
She ran on a progressive platform, as well as her work on water and agriculture issues in the legislature. She said the new role will be a lot of responsibility and she’s humbled by voters’ trust and faith in her.
