SC Villa have defeated their hosts Malaba Youth Development Association (Myda) FC 2-1 in the Ugandan Premier League at the King George IV Memorial Stadium in Tororo on Thursday.

Muhammad Kagawa Ssenoga and Derrick Ndahiro scored for the Jogoo to send them fourth in the log while Amos Kirya struck the only goal for the debutants.

The Malaba-based charges had collected just six points in the first round and came into the match aiming at getting maximum points to stand a chance of getting off the relegation zone. For the 16-time champions, a win was important for them to underline their intentions of fighting for the title this season.

Editors’ Picks

The visitors needed just five minutes to get their first goal when Ssenoga capitalised on defensive lapses to find the back of the net and put their visitors under pressure.

Five minutes later, Myda had a chance to get an equalizer when Dickson Outta brought in a great cross into the danger zone but Ibrahim Nsimbe lacked the composure to finish it.

In the 22nd minute, the hosts, once again, had a chance to get the ball in the back of the net when Nsimbe teed up Derrick Basoga, but with the goal at his mercy, he shot the ball wide.

The best opportunity for the promoted side came in the 38th minute. Kirya was brought down in the danger zone and the referee awarded them a penalty. Nsimbe stepped up but he skyrocketed the ball from 12-yards out.

The missed opportunity came back to haunt the team because in the stroke of halftime, Ndahiro doubled the advantage in favour of the visitors to ensure they go to the break leading 2-0.

Myda came back stronger after the break hoping to get the two goals and salvage at least a point. But they had to wait until the 56th minute to get a real chance to test the opponent’s custodian.

A good counter-attack ended with Villa’s defender blocking Paul Musamali’s fierce shot just outside the danger zone. However, the resulting freekick bore no fruits.

With 15 minutes to go, the hosts halved the deficit when Kirya connected an Erick Mutebi freekick. Despite late pressure in the remaining minutes, they did not manage to get an equalizer.
