Sounds like you don’t know what you’re talking about, they’re not illegal aliens. New Zealanders are allowed to live and work in Australia legally. Many are permanent residents who have lived here for decades, they pay taxes, they have the same access to Medicare, sometimes even the same welfare benefits, pay domestic fees for universities, some older kiwis even vote in Australian elections.
So basically in every other way they are treated as Australians, except that the special category visa doesn’t lead to becoming a citizen. It never really mattered before this law since they were treated as Australians anyway.
