The Rockies began the season on a high note with an 8-5 win over the Dodgers. Some highlights:
• German Marquez somehow got through a messy four innings. Half of the Dodgers’ 14 balls in play against Marquez were “hard-hit”, per Statcast, and he had a career-high-tying six walks. But through 92 pitches and a negated two-run homer, Marquez only allowed one run.
• Third baseman Josh Fuentes, making his first opening day start, played like he really wants everyone to stop referring to him as Nolan Arenado’s cousin. He started two early-game double-plays and had an RBI single.
• The Rockies made future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw look average. Colorado hit the southpaw for six runs (five earned) on 10 hits across 5 2/3 innings.
• Daniel Bard converted his first save opportunity of 2021 despite some theatrics. He got Mookie Betts to line out softly to second base to end the game with the bases loaded.
